Self-Regulation and Emotional Intelligence are linked to one another as with emotional intelligence we are attempting to get a better understanding of what our emotions are then we can choose how we want to respond, make better decisions, and have a better response other than a quick emotional one that could bring up feelings of regret later. Self-regulation is an important emotional intelligence tool that occurs in the neocortex part of the brain where rational thinking occurs. It is then affected by the emotional flooding of what is occurring in the amygdala, which creates our fight-or-flight response.
Emotional Intelligence means that I can recognize and understand my emotions and to know how they affect the people around me. Emotional perception of other is also a part of emotional intelligence as it helps manage relationships more efficiently with the ones closest to me. After taking the Emotional Intelligence test I feel like I could improve mine by examining the situations and people around me a little better. Though I scored a 61 on the test, I feel like the area that I lack in the most is that I become upset more often than I used to a few years ago and I have become more emotionally detached myself from others. Instead of ignoring and staying upset I could try more breathing exercises that were referenced in the video to de-escalate my emotions. The visual below shows a screenshot of what I scored on the emotional intelligence test and the description to the range that I am at.
