There being a connection between music and relationships has not been a thought that has crossed my mind. After reading the article “Soul Meets Body” I never realized that I did not give much thought into the link that music preference has on the values individuals express. It was interesting to see that the relationships I have formed with others have had an influence on the music that I listen to and vice versa. I now see the values I share with people when it comes to the music we have in common. Being able to make a connection through music with the ones I have relationships with and new ones that I am forming are important as it shares insight into who we are as individuals.

The songs that I choses represent the dynamic between myself and the relationship I have with my parents, brother, best friend, roommate, and grandparents. The last song represents the outlook I have on my life and the drive to succeed.

My brother: “It Don’t Have to Change” by John Legend

This song represents the bond that my brother and I share and that even though we aren’t living together anymore and life has taken us in different directions that nothing has to change. I will always be his older sister.

Parents: “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts

This song represents how I feel towards my parents. I thank them for raising me and being the anchors that I needed in my life. My wish for them is to know that I love them and that they get to enjoy the rest of their lives knowing that I will be okay and continue to make the right choices and that if they don’t need to carry more than they can hold.

Best friend: “Count on me” by Bruno Mars

This song is one that me and my best friend dedicated to each other. Even though we are 2,000 miles apart we know that we will be there for one another no matter what. If she ever needs someone to talk to at any hour of the day I will be there. Just like the lyrics to the song says “If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea, I’ll sail the world to find you.”

Roommate: “We’re Going to be Friends” by White Stripes

This song describes our relationship perfectly. My roommate and I met at work and how laid back our dynamic is with one another. When we met, we bonded over an adult beverage and anime, I knew right then that we were going to be friends.

Grandparents: “Do I Make You Proud” by Taylor Hicks

I wanted to dedicate this song to my grandparents who are no longer with me. Sometimes I go through days where I look back to when I was younger and would spend all my summers with them and if they would be looking down on me today and be proud. They did not get to see me graduate college with my associates and to see the gratitude I have for them.

Outlook on life: “My Way” by Frank Sinatra

My Way by Frank Sinatra is the song I chose to represent my outlook on life. I want to live a life that is full and to travel each road whether it is wrong or right. To learn through hardships and triumphs, to know that I did it my way. I want to be able to stand tall, laugh, cry, and feel loved as I do it all my way.
