Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
While looking for cybersecurity related majors at ODU, I came across a few. The four majors I chose are Computer Science, Cybercrime, Computer Operations, and Computer Engineering. ODU’s computer science program familiarizes students with software development, programming, and coding. They will also learn about database administration and information security analysis. Computer science is the study of computers and programming languages. Computer science relates to cybersecurity because cybersecurity is a subfield of computer science that focuses on the practice of protecting vital systems and sensitive data against digital threats. ODU’s cybercrime program teaches students about criminology, cybersecurity, and information technology. Students will learn about cybersecurity, digital forensics, computer networking, and programming languages such as Java and C+. Cybersecurity refers to steps taken to prevent and respond to unlawful operations carried out using technology, whereas cybercrime refers to illegal crimes carried out with technology. This is how the two correlate. Then we have computer operations. Cyber operations is an interdisciplinary major that includes all aspects of cyberspace and related activities, both technical and non-technical. System attacks, infiltration, exploitation, defense, mitigation, and recovery are the skills that students will learn. Cyber operation is related to cybersecurity because cyber operations is a broader term that includes all actions carried out in cyberspace which includes cybersecurity. Cyber security is a subcategory of cyber operations. Lastly, there is computer engineering. This program gives a wide background and a solid foundation in the technological principles that underpin the computer industry. Students will study electrical engineering and computer science. Computer engineers create, manufacture, and maintain the hardware in contemporary computers. Computer engineers work to create secure protocols and encryption methods to guard against possible attacks, while cybersecurity professionals practice ways to keep computer systems and electronic data safe. These are the four cybersecurity majors offered at ODU that I could find.
