Review the articles linked with each individual motive. Rank the
motives from 1 to 7 as the motives that you think make the most sense
(being 1) to the least sense (being 7). Explain why you rank each
motive the way you rank it.
- For money. This motive makes the most sense because it is the most beneficial. Stealing information to sell for a profit seems the most logical in terms of reasoning to hack. Money provides the most tangible result that can benefit a cybercriminal.
- Recognition. This motive makes sense because recognition is something that most people want to achieve. This seems like a common goal amongst most so it would make sense that hackers would carry out cybercrime to achieve this status.
- Politics. This makes sense to me as a motive because politicians who are not cybercriminals may also lie and do deceitful things. Politics can be messy and when discussing world matters it makes sense that computer geeks would use their cyber advantages to persuade things in politics.
- Revenge. We have all wanted to get revenge on someone before. While it is not always the best idea and sometimes we should just take the high-road, I understand why this is a motive on the list. It is not un-likely that someone does an act of cyber-crime in retaliation to something that have may been done to them or to cause a negative effect on someone they are against.
- Multiple reasons. I ranked this reason at 5 because I feel like multiple factors contributing to cyber crime makes sense to me. Sometimes these acts are not done for just one reason or just one motive. It could be for revenge and money or revenge and politics.
- Entertainment. This is lower on the list of motives that make sense to me because it baffles me that others get pure entertainment from committing crime. This motive is not acceptable because while it may be entertaining to a hacker, it is never fun for those on the other side of the attack.
- Boredom. I ranked this motive last because it was more pertaining to young children getting bored on their devices and oversharing or communicating with unsafe people online. This motive did mot make sense to me because I feel as though it can be easily avoided. Boredom should never be to blame for why cyber crime is taking place. Parents should be responsible enough to keep their child active and teach them about online safety and etiquette.
