Journal Entry 8 – How does the media influence our understanding on cybersecurity?

Watch this video and pay attention to the way that movies distort hackers.

Here are my thoughts after watching the following video.

The media can strongly influence our understanding on cybersecurity in many ways. Most movies, TV shows, and video games depict hackers as someone who is extremely fast at what they do, as well as making it seem like an easy task. When in reality, hacking requires some knowledge, and it takes time. Another way is when some media makes up believe that clicking one wrong thing can give someone access to our camera, along with a bunch of other unrealistic ideas, that then puts fear into the individuals who have watched it, giving unrealistic ideas on hacking. Although these things do happen, it takes more than one wrong click for a hacker to accesses certain data. Overall, I believe that the media portrays hacking and cybersecurity in the wrong ways by making it seem easy. When in reality, hacking and cybersecurity takes lots of patience, requires certain skills, and is time consuming.
