Hacking Humans Article Summary

Digitalizing DNA has its pros and cons. Some of its pros include helping medical research, by finding cures to fatal illnesses. However, do the cons outweigh the pros? Imagining your DNA being stolen and potentially put on the dark web is a scary thought. Like the article said, your DNA cannot be replaced. Once it’s stolen, there’s no replacing it. It could easily be taken and passed around and used by criminals. Another terrifying thought that comes with digitalizing DNA is, what if your DNA is used for genetic engineering?  Along with, imagine you get denied a job, or maybe even denied entry into a school, all because your DNA isn’t the best match. These are just some of the things we must think about when it comes to digitalizing DNA.

There are many risks when it comes to having our DNA digitalized, and hacking humans will never stop. It has, and continues to be, the easier way for hackers to get the outcome they want. As technology progresses and digitalizing DNA becomes a more relevant thing, it creates a whole new frontier within the cybersecurity field. We must consider how digital DNA is kept and how it’s protected. Without knowing this, we are putting ourselves at great risk of identity theft, or even worse.

Therefore, we must pay more attention and demand organizations to store and protect our DNA properly. If our identity was stolen with our DNA, it will not be as easy to get back compared to if our social security was stolen. Organizations and consumers must pay detail to these things. Although, digitalizing DNA can be great for medical and scientific research, is it worth the rest of these risks?
