The penpal assignment was something that frightened me once I first saw it. However, after a few unsuccessful attempts at finding one, I eventually got a response from James Kattato, and Emmy Award-Winning sports anchor for WAVY-TV 10. My recruiting process for this assignment consisted of me sifting through LinkedIn and Facebook looking for candidate’s. I was unsure if anyone would respond, given that some people I reached out to are very popular media figures, but eventually I got my response. I ended up receiving a couple responses, actually. However, I ultimately chose James Kattato since he has many years of experience under his belt. Once I chose my candidate, I followed up with him to let him know that this assignment lasts over the course of the semester. Once he agreed to contribute to this assignment, I was eager to pick his brain. Also, James Kattato is a local figure that also follows local sports, something that I am interested in as well. I believed that it was important to find a local figure given that I would have more to cover. With popular media figures, most of their stories are searchable. Kattato has been in the sports media world for 10 years. He went to State University of New York at Oswego for his bachelors and attended S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Kattato started as a sports intern for WKTV News Channel 2 in 2015. Eventually, after years of interning and working at different news stations, he eventually landed on WAVY-TV 10. Through my brief research on my candidate, it’s clear to me that this recruit of mine was the perfect choice. I am eager to interview him and learn more about how sports media has influenced his life. I am also interested to learn about the intricacies of the profession as well.
