In order to discuss computer safety, “safe” must be defined. Like children, it is impossible to create an environment for them to be completely safe, but by donning analogical helmet and knee pads, it is possible to prevent some dangers and mitigate others. Microsoft provides a list of tips to protect your computer, around which I frame my definition (Work remotely, 2023). A safe computer – A computer-network combination which is in its most reliable setup operated by responsible and educated users.
The reliable setup requires firewalls, or equivalent protection software/hardware combination, to keep unwanted connections from being established. Up-to-date software and antivirus reduce exploitable bugs and help identify malicious software unintentionally acquired by users. With these basics in place, the user must execute diligence to ensure safety isn’t compromised in a way not anticipated by the antivirus and other computer software. Using simple passwords, downloading items and opening email attachments from untrusted sources, and using external devices, such as USB, that the user doesn’t own are examples of things the computer won’t anticipate and may not be ready to combat. In short, there is no “safe” computer without an educated user.
Computer safety notwithstanding, computers themselves have opened many doors, both good and bad. Biometric access systems have provided the ability to restrict access to sensitive areas and information, improving the safety and security of these areas. Digital banking and computers in the banking industry have allowed for safer transactions between buyer and seller by reducing the need for physical fiat currency and by using user trend information to discern when a transaction is likely illegitimate, making most things in your wallet less desirable. On the other side of the banking coin, computers have created opportunities for bad actors to drain a bank account with a click of a button. Computers use in data storage has a good and bad side also; although digital storage has reduced the need to keep large physical files and increased accessibility throughout a team, it has also created opportunity for bad actors to access and steal or ransom that same data. Computers have also created tremendous opportunities, psychologically and literally, for bullying to take place. Without the risk of consequences, people that may never bully find a reason to very easily with potential victims numbering in the billions.
