Safety and Security Inside and Outside the Criminal Justice System

on

Spoken broadly, Engineers design and protect networks from the ground up; they test and employ all of the hardware, software, and peripherals that keep the network available and secure for users. Every Engineer with their hand in the development of a network plays a role in keeping it safe and secure.

The DevSecOps Engineer plays a vital role in network safety and security. They must ensure security is built-in to every level and stage of software and network development. They do this through creating, automating, and analyzing processes, leading incident management, and testing and implementation of new security technology, among many other things. (MONGABOURE, 2021)

According to TechTarget.com, a network engineer brings “high-availability network infrastructure to sustain the users’ online and on-site information technology activities.” They do this by identifying appropriate network configurations and monitoring the network to identify and troubleshoot issues. A network Engineer often works as, or closely with, a network architect and security systems Engineers to ensure the networks they deliver can stand up to the current cyber threat. (Lutkevich & Earls, 2021)

These are just two examples of the kinds of Engineers that help keep networks safe and secure. There are those that would undermine the hard work of these network protectors, the cyber criminals. Much like criminals who commit wrongs outside of the cyber world, cyber criminals are criminals because they break laws built to control and protect the public. The connection between criminal justice and cybercrime is much more than the delivery of justice to this specific sect of criminals, cybercrime is also linked to criminal justice in many of the same ways it is linked to other disciplines. The systems used to maintain the safety and security of the criminal justice data systems and protect the SCADA systems in use throughout prisons, courthouses, and other criminal justice institutions must utilize the same rigor as every other cyber security system.
