Second-choice of a Career

In the video, the speaker starts off as an accountant who did a little network stuff on the side at his accountant job. As he progressed in experience level and, given his dual abilities making him twice as marketable, he ended up at a big accounting firm. While there, he had an offer come up to become a digital forensic investigator.

I think this is how most people who are genuinely interested in a field feel when they do something else. For instance, I am a career electronics technician, but I’ve always had real interest in social engineering and computers. The speaker, like many of us, went into something that he liked, “enough.”

As depressing as this sounds, I think it’s a necessary evil for a majority of any field to have people with a tremendous amount of experience in some other field. The effect is two-fold; not only are you happy in your job (because you genuinely like it), but you can also look at problems from different vantage points than others. Imagine if everyone the world over only knew how to do one thing professionally, finishing primary school, then attending college for one thing, and then working in that field for their entire life. That may be more depressing than having to try two or three times to figure out what you want to do.
