SCADA Systems

Critical infrastructure systems will always be a vital part of society but are increasingly vulnerable to cybersecurity threats. SCADA systems are vital for diminishing these risks through the use of remote management and collecting real-time data from RTUs.

Vulnerabilities Associated With Critical Infrastructure Systems

There are many critical infrastructure systems that are crucial for society to function smoothly. These include wind farms, water treatment, airports, and gas pipelines. However, they are all also very vulnerable to cybersecurity threats, which can halt operations and have a great economic impact. Lack of training and knowledge of the cybersecurity needs of a system can lead to extreme vulnerabilities. Many companies are unaware of the risks that come if they are not effectively handling cybersecurity threats. Employees are not properly trained in simple things such as making strong passwords or avoiding suspicious sites. This then leads to hackers gaining access (CISA, 2023). If there is malware in the systems, it can be easier for hackers to gather information or take over the system completely.

SCADA Systems in Mitigating Risks

SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. When it comes to managing cybersecurity risks, SCADA systems are crucial as they are able to get real-time information on threats and have strong security protocols. SCADA systems can help mitigate risks by providing real-time monitoring of essential infrastructure (SCADA Systems – SCADA Systems, n.d.). Using this, the operator can quickly detect a problem or threat within the system and correct it quickly and efficiently in order to continue operations as usual.

Conclusion

To close, SCADA systems play an important role in making sure that critical infrastructure systems are protected by managing cybersecurity risks. SCADA systems are able to detect problems before they arise to allow time for the operator to smoothly manage the situation. If problems do arise, the operator is alerted by the SCADA system immediately to prevent operations from coming to a halt. By prioritizing these systems, there can be better assurance that critical infrastructure systems are protected from cybersecurity risks and threats.
