What is it?
The cybercrime major prepares students for occupations in law enforcement and information technology. Students in the cybercrime program will be required to developed strong written and verbal communication skills as well as skills in mathematics and logic. Students majoring in cybercrime will take courses in criminology, cybersecurity, and information technology. Through these courses, they will learn about technology-related criminal justice issues, including cyber laws and computer crime investigations. They will also acquire the technical skills that employers are looking for; this includes knowledge of cybersecurity, digital forensics, computer networking, and common programming languages like Java and C+.
How does it relate to cybersecurity?
Students seeking a degree in cybercrime are individuals that will investigate cybercrime and cybercriminals. Individuals with a cybercrime degree will be familiar with laws, policies, and regulations that govern cyberspace. Cybersecurity is the prevention of computer-related crime, physical or in cyberspace, yet if there is a breach or crime committed, cybercrime professionals have to become involved.
2. Technology Education
What is it?
Technology education is a critical shortage of teaching areas in Virginia for middle school and high school. Technology education is not just learning about computers or other communications devices such as cell phones. Technology education studies the human-designed world and is closely tied to science education, which explores the natural environment. The Technology-Education program includes the study of technological systems, processes, and artifacts, and most major courses contain laboratory activities to help students understand the tools, materials, and principles associated with medical, agricultural, biological, energy and power, communication, transportation, manufacturing, and construction technologies.
How does it relate to cybersecurity?
Technology Education degree is “#4 ON THE CRITICAL SHORTAGE TEACHING LIST IN VA” and, in my opinion, is the most important for the future of cybersecurity. Technology Education professionals are in charge of educating the public at a young age about tech and everything it involves. Part of the problem cybersecurity professionals has to face today. Is the lack of understanding when it comes to best security practices and lack of technology savviness. Individuals with Technology Education will help tremendously by implementing technology familiarity and best practices to the school’s curriculum to prepare the future generation better. Technology Education is the bottom-up approach to cybersecurity.
3. Economics
What is it?
Economics graduates are considered generalists who are well-trained in analytical thinking. Majoring in economics is a springboard to a very wide variety of careers, not only in businesses but also in government agencies and not-for-profit organizations. A major in economics is also excellent preparation for graduate study toward master’s and doctoral degrees in economics, business, public administration, urban studies, international studies, marine affairs, and other fields. Furthermore, even many law schools encourage prospective students to consider majoring in economics as undergraduates.
How does it relate to cybersecurity?
Organizations and communities’ economics must have individuals in positions of influence to consider every aspect of a deal, plan, equipment, software, service, and procedure before they make a final decision. For example, cybersecurity is an interdisciplinary topic, and cybersecurity professionals should not only think about breeches, vulnerabilities, risks, and programs. Cybersecurity professionals should think about the impact a specific new security software or hardware will have to produce and if the cost is appropriate for the size of the organization.
4. Political and Legal Studies
What is it?
This program is designed to give students a solid grounding in the history of philosophy and an ability to analyze arguments proposed in serious discussions of any subject. The political and legal studies concentration is aimed at students interested in social and political philosophy, particularly those planning to attend law school.
How does it relate to cybersecurity?
A Political and Legal studies degree is a top-bottom approach to dealing with cybersecurity. Students seeking this degree are preparing to go out and make a difference by modifying and creating new policies in the endless journey to make cyberspace a safer place. If students decided to go to law school after acquiring a degree in Political and Legal Studies, they would be able to prosecute cybercriminals. Like cybercrime students, Political and Legal Studies professionals get involved after a cybercrime has occurred.
