Career Paper: Cybersecurity in Business

When we look at today’s society, we see the expansive scope of technology. Modern technology has brought advances to every aspect of our lives. From financial to medical to business purposes, technology plays a key role in our modern way of life. With most technology, however, comes the many risks you may find plaguing any technological system. Businesses need to have a thorough understanding of key social principles when it comes to creating a cybersecurity network to protect value data and assets.

How does cybersecurity fit into a business structure? For starters, all businesses big or small need security. When using technology, security should be the top priority for a business to have. When setting up a cybersecurity system or program, it is important to know the basics of what is needed to keep data safe and secure. A good way to get a basis on what you will need to provide is listed in the NICE Workforce Framework, which details all the different ideas and principles of cybersecurity and what jobs they are attributed to.

How does a cybersecurity program work? When setting up a security system, it is key that the right protocols are followed. The right people need to be hired, and the right things need to be implemented to have the system run smoothly. With the increased use of technology came many threats that target weak and unprotected systems. Some important aspects to begin with are the workers hired to maintain the system, the framework of the system itself, and the measures put in place to eliminate or prevent threats.

“Train employees in security principles.” (Cybersecurity for Small Businesses, n.d.) When scouting for the right workers, you must be confident and clear of who you need and what those people need to do. Specific jobs need specific people such as IT Specialists and Chief Information Officers. You want the right people working on keeping your company safe. “Protect information, computers, and networks from cyber-attacks.” (Cybersecurity for Small Businesses, n.d.) As the article again states, the main priority is keeping company data from being exposed to external sources or threats. They need to make sure only those authorized can access or see the data, and they ensure it only stays with those authorized persons.

How does a business prevent data leaks and stop threats to their systems? There are a variety of ways. One important way is to put up cyber firewalls. These blocks in the code prevent unauthorized people from accessing things they shouldn’t. Another way is to use strong password protected systems. “A business can require staff and users to create complex passwords and regularly update them.” (Itpartners, 2024)

In conclusion, cybersecurity is pivotal in running a business of any kind. It is the cornerstone from which all technological systems of a company span from. Without cybersecurity, without the social aspect, nothing would work right. Nothing would be safe, and data would be leaked to those who want to use it for malicious intent.
