Mid-Semester Reflection

Study Habits

  • What classes are you doing well in, and why?

I am doing well in my Chemistry lab class, Sociology, and Psychology. The assignments we have in Chem lab are mostly classwork so I finish them in class, it is easy to keep track of those assignments. In Sociology, the only assignments we have are readings and quizzes, so the workload is pretty light. In Psychology, we have readings and occasionally have collaborative labs that we complete in class.

  • What classes did you identify as needing assistance in?

Math, Chemistry, and this class I am having some trouble in because I have gotten a little behind. In Math, we have homeworks online and they usually take more than an hour to complete. In chemistry, we have readings, notes, and homeworks. While the readings and notes don’t take that long, the homeworks personally takes more than one hour to finish. For health professions, I have just gotten behind on one assignment and have had trouble finding time to finish and submit it. I think I need to figure out a schedule when to complete these assignments.

  • What changes have you made (i.e. amount of time, location, campus resources, study strategies, etc…)?

I have been using the common room to do my homework. Sometimes I will have to do my work in my room because it is occupied. I think that I have more trouble focusing on doing work in my room. I live in Rogers Annex and the library and other study areas are far away from  my dorm and are kind of inconvenient especially at night.

Transition to College

  • What expectations did you have coming to college?

I thought that it would be easier than highschool, and in some ways it is but also I had motivation in high school and it doesn’t seem like I have a lot now. I also thought there wouldn’t be a lot of drama with friends because I thought that people were more mature in college.

  • Have those expectations come to fruition, or not?

Yes and no.

  • How?

I think that I have less work to do but I don’t have the motivation to finish at some times. I have also realized that there is a lot more drama I have experienced in college than in highschool and that was surprising to me.

  • In what way is your college experience different from what you expected?

I thought it would be more about finding who I am as a person and growing into that, and it is but also it’s more than that. I have met people that I believe will grow beside me and be a part of the rest of my life. I have experienced things that will stick with me for the rest of my life whether I want them to or not.

  • What has surprised you about your experiences so far this semester?

Some of the things that I have experienced were very surprising because I would have never thought that I would experience them or go through something like that. I don’t really know how to live with them to be honest. But there are also things that I will learn and grow from and I am thankful for that.

  • If you live on campus: What has been your toughest challenge with moving away to college? Easiest challenge to overcome?

I think the hardest thing about moving away to college is knowing that I am missing out on things at home, not being able to see my siblings grow and be there when they need me. Or being able to be there when I need them. I love my family and it is very hard being away from them and my home.

Major

  • Name something you have learned about your intended major that you did not know at the beginning of the semester.

I learned that you do not have to take an assessment to get into the Dental Hygiene program. I was very surprised because I thought that for all health related programs you had to take an assessment prior to applying for the specific program.

  • Have your feelings changed about your intended major? List some thoughts you are having.

I am still very interested in being a Dental Hygienist and I can’t imagine myself working as something other than that.

  • Is there another subject (major or minor) that you are interested in learning more about?

I can’t really think of anything at the moment but maybe next year I will be interested in a minor.

Connecting to Campus

  • Name one problem or challenge you have encountered this semester, and which resource(s) at ODU you have/can utilize to assist with this situation.

I have had some problems with my room, specifically mold. I have put in work orders with ODU maintenance and they have successfully completed the order, hopefully the mold with not return.

  • Is there a friend, roommate, professor, advisor, or group in the ODU community who has helped you so far this semester? If so, how did they help you?

My roommate and other friends have been with me through tough situations and have supported me through them. I am very thankful for them and I would not know what I would have done without them. They truly feel like my second family and I can’t go a day without them.

  • Have you attended an interest meeting for a club? Why did you decide to get involved or not get involved?

I have not, I still haven’t found a club that fits my interests but I am still looking and being hopeful!
