For most classes, there was a homework assignment which was to read part of a chapter and complete some of the questions that were in it. This homework was useful for allowing myself to be surrounded with the content of the course outside of the lectures; I often found myself doing homework while I was at work, for example. The questions in the homework involved testing comprehension from the reading, but also self-reflection and relating the information to other subjects or things the reader may already know.
