Research Presentation, “The Inclusion of Student Selected Repertoire in Secondary Instrumental Ensembles,” Women Band Directors International Summer Conference, June, 2020.
Session Abstract: This session will discuss the process of inclusion of student selected repertoire in secondary ensemble programs. The process of selecting repertoire typically includes variety of factors and limitations that dictate the pieces a band director can select for their ensembles. Factors that are often overlooked include the appeal of repertoire to students, as well as their musical preferences. The inclusion of student selected repertoire in secondary instrumental programs can empower students, develop students’ musical identities, create an understanding of what constitutes as quality repertoire, demystify the repertoire selection process, and place the responsibility of learning on the students. Attendees will learn about the psychology behind the inclusion of student choices within ensemble programming, as well as successful processes to including student selected repertoire within their ensemble programs.
