The process of selecting repertoire typically includes variety of factors and limitations that dictate the pieces a band director can select for their ensembles. Factors that are often overlooked include the appeal of repertoire to students, as well as their musical preferences. The inclusion of student selected repertoire in secondary instrumental programs can empower students, develop students\u2019 musical identities, create an understanding of what constitutes as quality repertoire, demystify the repertoire selection process, and place the responsibility of learning on the students.
