This was a harder Talk Abroad for me. Honestly the hardest one I have experienced thus far in French. It did not go how my previous conversations have gone and took a turn where I was asking the questions. In my previous TalkAbroads, my partner has asked me questions and then I have responded and followed up by asking them questions. This time it was the opposite. I also did not understand my partner asking me if I had any questions for her so there was some awkward silence before I realized what she was asking me to do. While this was more challenging than previous experiences, it was still fulfilling and taught me a lot. It was a learning curve that I am grateful for because being uncomfortable and figuring it out makes you better. It felt how it would be if I was in France and didn’t understand what someone was saying to me. My partner loves music and cooking and is from Haiti. She is in school and does TalkAbroad for work. For my next conversation I plan to practice my pronunciation of the questions in case that happens again. I also had a hard time when she would ask follow up questions that were not listed on the TalkAbroad sheet because I didn’t feel as prepared and the pronunciation of French words is so different, especially from someone from haiti. The inflection was a little different. I think my partner was trying to stay engaged but having trouble understanding what I was saying at times because my pronunciation was off. I look forward to my next talk abroad and I think using the ImmerseMe every week is only going to help me get even better at my french speaking and listening skills.
