Spanish Discussion Reflections

Social media is a major part of popular culture. Social media has many benefits and a plethora of negative side effects all working simultaneously. The positive effects of social media are the connections that are made and maintained. People can stay connected to family and friends from all over the world. In addition, people can discover new places and become involved in events just by staying aligned with friends online. Social media can also provide real time updates on current events and breaking news stories. However, social media is packed with cons, and many are based upon an addiction to social media. An addiction to receiving praise or likes from strangers and friends. People can unfortunately feel self-doubt and an increased downtrodden mood by not receiving the desired attention. In my opinion, society is more connected than ever technologically but also more disconnected at the same time.

Exploring Culture

I had the honor of participating in diversity leadership training with my employer. We discussed through a week-long conference the importance of diversity within our organization. The diversity conference used innovative measures and live acted scenarios to demonstrate the need for diversity and sensitivity training.  I learned the importance of knowing how certain unintentional communication is offensive to others and certain racial groups. The training seemed common sense at times, but diversity education makes everything clear and leaders more equip. I appreciated the light-hearted approach and inclusive atmosphere the diversity conference provided. We learned the hurtful leadership practices of the past that divided organizations and learned skills to not repeat it. 

Gender and Leadership

    Leadership and gender will always be a topic and controversial subject matter in all educational spaces. As modern society is emerging and redefining the image of a leader, gender is still an issue especially the inclusion of women. Women have long held great positions in society but continue to be judged by antiquated mindsets. Women in leaderships roles are sometimes believed to have more emotional reasoning in their leadership styles. However, that is a viewpoint based upon gender solely. A male leader would never be deemed too emotional but rather very passionate by comparison. 

Presentational Speaking

I feel people have become less compassionate, empathetic and have an overall lack of etiquette online than years before. I feel, people only understand the snapshot of a person and not the whole person who could be struggling to stay afloat with school, work, children, a spouse or just life in general. I have learned to spend less time online and develop deeper connections off the computer which matters most. I use social media for a few hours a day and limit my time on the various platforms. I find benefit in seeing my distant friends and family and learning new recipes and discovering new impactful viewpoints. I also feel it is beneficial by facilitating professional relationships and assisting in new opportunities for extracurricular hobbies/goals. However, I desire to keep a grounded peace and reality in my waking life and value personal connections offline as healing to the soul.

Presentational Writing

An innovative, visionary can reach the masses by creating clear paths to success. Politicians, greatly exude the wants of a generation with or without achieving it. The key component is that the people no matter the outcome believe in their favorite politicians because they have connected to their charm. The entrepreneurial element of being the great salesman is an underrated style in leadership. Great leadership is not a one size fits all method but should use all leadership styles to address needs. A team that can grow to motivation and integrity can inspire an organization. In a time where leadership is expressed more digitally, it is paramount that innovation in leadership is commonplace.

Interpretive Listening

During the semester I have participated in interpretive listening activities such as video interactive sessions with my instructor and classmates in English and Spanish.

Interpretive Reflection

Upon introduction to the course, I have learned to remain positive as challenges arise when learning new material. Learning a new language is difficult but incorporating an attitude of positivity has assisted me tremendously.

Spanish Educational Aids

Learning to participate in activities online via the contraséna site has been beneficial and a wonderful interactive experience. The best aspect of the contraséna (lingro learning) website is that it allows me as the student to listen and apply all of my educational learning in one place and practice as often as needed before submissions.
