Learning Style: Self-Assessment
To study for an important quiz or test I normally would study the
material as I learn it always reviewing to make sure I understand the
material before moving on to learning something else. I would generally
take an hour a day to look over the material and then study hard a day
before the test or quiz. As the level of difficulty is different for each class so
is the amount of time I spend studying for the class. I might spend hours
studying for sociology or chemistry but only one hour studying for theatre.
While I am in class, I always make sure to take diligent notes and focus
while the professor is talking. Outside of class I study the notes I took and if
there is a textbook for the class I would try and read and take notes before
the professor even goes over the topic in class. I am doing well in sociology
as of right now and it is because I read and take notes out of the textbook
before class and take the practice quizzes available to me as well.
I am doing good in all my classes as of right now, but I foresee
chemistry possibly becoming a challenge once we move on to things I am
not as familiar with. For the planning portion of the class I will mostly use
study groups and practice problems to help me learn the material. I will
spend about 4 hours per week devoted to studying and I will mostly focus
on the future material that might serve as a greater challenge for me to
learn. For the monitoring portion of the class, I have not been very
systematic with my studying because the concepts we are working on right
now are familiar to me since I took AP Chemistry in high school. I have not
taken advantage of all the learning supports offered to me quite yet, but I
am sure I will soon. Sometimes I find myself not wanting to study and
lacking motivation, but when that happens, I just remember that I am
taking it to get to the career I really want. I do not have any confusions
right now and feel confident in my abilities thus far. For the evaluation
portion of the class, I think studying all week before an exam and then a
hard study right before worked well for me. Next time I should try to do
more of the study problems since I struggled with some of those. To clarify
that confusion, I just need to take the time to study the problems a little
harder and not just look at the answer key. One study technique I can use in
class is knowing my distractions. This means putting away my phone and
any other distractions that will keep me from learning. A study technique I
can outside of class is forming study groups. Since I get easily distracted
when I am alone for too long, forming a study group will help me focus.
