SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communicatio

Exploring Culture

To get a better understanding of cultures outside the United States, I learned about the popular foods in Hispanic countries. I got to learn about what foods people eat on special occasions and what other peoples favorite food are. Some of the food I have never heard of before, but would be interested in trying.

I believe that learning about the foods in other cultures is very important and helps us understand other peoples culture better. I learned that the values surrounding food are very similar to the United States. It is very common that people eat together to celebrate special occasions and holidays. Also many people like to eat meals with people they love which is a value that is shared across the globe.

Engaging in Communities

In English, give a brief description of the value of, and importance of, engaging in your immediate community and thLearning another language like Spanish is important when engaging in other communities. It gives you the opportunity to engage and connect with more people in your local and global communities. Being able to engage with more people is beneficial for spreading ideas and culture. It also helps us learn more about the people around us.

Interpersonal Communication

With TalkAbroad I gained experience in communicating with a Spanish speaker outside the classroom. I completed two fifteen minute interviews with people from other countries outside the United States. I also completed two workbooks that allowed me to prepare and reflect on my interviews.

I think that TalkAbroad was very beneficial in helping me gain experience with communicating in Spanish. At the beginning of each interview I would be very nervous but after completing the workbook I was prepared with plenty of questions so the conversation went more smoothly. Some questions I came up with on the spot so the conversation would be more natural.

Presentational Speaking

In Chapter 8, I learned how to describe foods and eating habits. Using the knowledge I learned in the chapter I was able to create a 3 minute video describing the ingredients and how to prepare one of my favorite meals.

The most challenging part of creating this video was using learning and using command verbs. I had to use command verbs throughout the video to demonstrate the steps of preparing my favorite dish. I also learned a lot of new vocabulary in this chapter that was beneficial in helping me describe my food.

Presentational Writing

In Chapter 7 I learned how to describe sports and fitness in Spanish. I completed an activity where I made and advertisement for a sport or activity. I choose to do yoga and in my project I described the benefits of yoga and how it was good for your health.

In this Chapter I had to learn how to use informal commands to describe what to do in yoga class. Learning about informal commands was new for me but I found them very useful when I was completing my writing project.

Interpretive Listening

In Chapter 8, I watched a video in class that described a meal delivery service. After watching the video I answered a few questions regarding the information in the video. This activity allowed me to practice my listening skills.

This video helped me identify vocabulary words and better understand how to use informal command verbs. Videos like this give me the opportunity to practice listening to Spanish speakers which is really important and can help with communication skills.

Interpretive Reading

In Chapter 9 I learned how to read and interpret info-graphs in Spanish. Info-graphs are a very useful way to share information without having to use a lot of words. It also allows you to easily understand the main ideas of the topic you are reading.

These are two examples of info-graphs that we looked at in class. The info-graphs includes a title, subheadings, pics, and information that helps us better understand the pictures. The best part of info-graphs is that I didn’t have to know every Spanish world used to understand the information that was given. Later in the chapter I was able to create my own info-graph.
