Communication is the key component to assessment. This semester I observed and gathered information from my practicum classroom teacher about the students before planning the lessons. That information allowed me to plan appropriately for their level of understanding. While utilizing the i+1 method for teaching during instructional time, I communicated the expectations of the lesson and gave the students enough information to stretch just beyond their level of understanding. During group activities, I walked around classroom listening to student interaction and provided feedback as necessary. In doing this I was able to assess the needs of my students and make changes to instruction that kept them in the zone of proximal development.
