Journal Entry #3

  1. How might researchers use this information to study breaches?  Enter a paragraph in your journal.

It’s important for researchers to analyze data breaches for multiple reasons through a technical and social lens. Researchers can understand why the data breach occurred to educate others about the issue. This helps mitigate the chances of other organizations becoming victims of this attack vector. In addition, data breaches also provide information about the potential target of the attack. The targeted data may indicate the intent of the hackers. For example, an organized hacker group targeting sensitive information inside a database may show intent to either bribe or sell off the compromised data. While an Advanced Persistent Threat group may target critical infrastructure systems in attempt to compromise a countries internal framework. Finally, another piece of information researchers may conclude from data breaches would be the reasoning or response of the organization. In ransomware attacks, some companies choose to pay the ransom to the attackers to regain their encrypted information or unlock their critical systems. Their reasoning of choosing to pay the ransom may allow researchers to use a physiological perspective in their shoes. Researchers may come up with a second solution to avoid other companies from paying the ransom to benefit the industry in the future.
