Journal Entry #8

After watching the video, write a journal entry about how you think the media influences our understanding about cybersecurity

Individuals who do not fully understand the concept of cybersecurity are mostly influenced by the media they consume. Instead, different forms of media have different goals. Some goals focus on solely entertaining the viewers and do not care about accurately depicting cybersecurity. Thus, causing misinformation and confusion about cybersecurity to outsiders. In movies for example, many of the “hacking” scenes show enormous amounts of visuals, diagrams, and appealing imagery to show a hacker compromising a system in the scene. When in reality, attackers are mindlessly staring into the void of a terminal, with no visuals. Another concept that is not accurate to me is how easy “hacking” looks in movies. Finding zero-day vulnerabilities inside a hardened system takes an enormous amount of skill, time, and resources to even find. Something that takes days/weeks to find, document, and to accurately replicate. In movies, the hacker seems to be able to do all this in 15 minutes. The purpose and motive of the media consumed should be assessed to understand how accurate the information can be. Not only relating to cybersecurity, but social media currently has been plagued by disinformation, misinformation, and “fake news” that bends the truth about many different industries. This concept relies on the user to research and cross reference their understanding of cybersecurity.
