Diversity – Student Diverse Learner Needs in the General Education Classes (SPED406)

During my SPED406 course, I develop cultural awareness by examining cultural differences and diverse learners needs should have an impact on instruction to ensure success of all students.

——————————————————————————————————————–

  • During this course, I learned about about various types of diverse learners and how to be conscious of their needs within a general classroom setting to create a inclusive classroom.
  • During this class, I completed application homework assignments where I applied the concepts and knowledge learned in the course to real life experiences.
  • Prior to this class, I have never knowingly experienced an inclusive classroom or so I never knew what to expect. Upon taking the course, I learned proper terminology for various diverse learners, information on how to advocate for and help families with diverse learners and how to accommodate diverse learners into my classroom without “othering” them. At this point in my academic career, I was employed at the Children’s Learning and Research Center, where I got to employ the knowledge learned during my assistantship in an inclusion classroom.
  • I developed a proficiency for in working inclusion classrooms through learning about the various kinds of diverse learning students (i.e. ELLs, students with disabilities, and gifted students). With knowledge about the various types of students, I was able to work with diverse students with the Learning Center more effectively.
  • This experience relates to my future goal of being a teacher because it is my duty to make sure that I am properly serving all of my students to make sure they can reach their fullest potential. Through this course, I have been able to recognize that all students have different needs that need to be met for learning to actually occur. My goal is to provide all my students a safe space to thrive in their own ways and to provide resources and support needed to advocate for my students and their families.
