Service Learning – Elementary Art Education Methods & Classroom Management (ARTS305)

Through the ARTS305 course, I was able to connect academic curriculum with meaningful public work to strengthen our communities for a sustainable future, despite the semester being cut short last year.

  • Throughout the length of this course, I learned various art practices and classroom management techniques while providing fuel experience of teaching an art-integrated lesson a public school.
  • During this class, I got create a group and solo art integrated science lesson to teach to demonstrate to classmates and students, respectively. Included on this page are: an embedded tutorial video and lesson plan from my solo lesson.

  • Despite the circumstance and hardships faced due to the pandemic, I was able to create my first solo lesson plan that involved integration across the curriculum. In another world, I would have hoped to actually teach my lesson to a local elementary school; however, the tutorial portion for the lesson is still available for students wanting to unleash their inner artist through pastels.
  • Prior to the start of the course, I knew I wanted to make visual arts part of my classroom culture but I could never figure out how–prior to this course. During this course, I discovered how elements of art are present every where and how it connects to curriculum. Because of this course, I was successfully able to create a solo integrated lesson plan for this course as well as other art-integrated lesson plans in other courses.
  • This experience would be relevant to my future career as a teacher because, as a visual arts-enthusiast, I want to be sure to introduce my students to various forms of art to spark their interest and how the importance of art to the society. As someone who was fortunate enough to have been introduced to (and participated in) different forms of art, I felt that it made me a well-rounded student and I want to offer the same to my future students. This course equipped me with classroom activities and management techniques that I could use in my classroom to make it fun, engaging and orderly.
