Old Dominion University is one of the first Universities that is considered to be a multi-serving institution. This is an aspect that I love about the University. Having the many cultures that we have, Indian, African American, Asians, etc., gives the University depth in my opinion. We have the ability to learn other cultures, create clubs where we can share our cultures and, interact with one another every day. Old Dominion also offered a course: Diversity Issues-Human Service. Although the University revealed the positive side of diversity, the course revealed a possible negative side and its effects. It gave me a better sense of empathy for people that are in different cultures going through different situations. There was one assignment during this course that really opened my eyes. “Crisis of homeless youth” was an assignment that revealed some statistic on homeless youth, its effects, and how it is a crisis. It opened my eyes or gave me a better sense of empathy because these are young people that are my age, in my neighborhood, have my interest but are living a totally different lifestyle. Because I gained more empathy for certain groups, I can have more of a motivation to help this group. This is beneficial for the field I want my career in because it is hard to get people to change their ways so staying motivated helps clients become motivated. The assignment also forced me to research, collect and process the information which helps me in future jobs. Attached please find the mentioned assignment.
