There are many courses that I could draw from in regards to personal and professional development, but none have impacted my development quite like the course Approach to Suicide Prevention. This course may not be part of the LeADERS program, but it has effected me in the same manner.

PSYC 495: Approach to Suicide Prevention
________________________________________________________
My experiences throughout this course are characterized by comprehension of suicide prevention-related ethical issues, terminology, attitudes and social norms, vulnerable populations, risk and protective factors, mental health services, and public health approaches to suicide prevention facilitated by the use of case study analysis, interactive in class analyses, prevention training, and working within an interprofessional group setting. Working within the interprofessional team, careful analysis of current literature, and the analysis of case studies contributed to the enhancement of the effective team building environments, data analysis, and professional report writing and presentation skill sets in my personal and professional development. A literature review on the topic of “Suicidality Among College Women in Correlation with Intimate Partner Violence” and a disseminated work product visual were cultivated during the time spent within the interprofessional team. In addition to the review, the group would also assess the risk and protective factors of clients that may be at risk for suicide ideation, planning, or suicide death. It was the groups job to come to a diagnosis of whether the client needed to seek further assistance or if a gradual limiting and frequent follow-ups would suffice. Another important experience that I received through this class was the training for “Counseling of Access to Lethal Means” and “A Strategic Planning Approach to Suicide Prevention”. This helped with preparation for future situations that could potentially arise within my personal life or professional career.
