My leadership course that I took is BIOL 405w. This course is surrounded around developing a well-written research paper and presentation. This paper is continuously pieced throughout the course. The pieces are reviewed by the professor, group members, and a faculty sponsor. The leadership experience is displayed through guiding one’s peers through the completion of his or her paper. The student is also able to lead by writing about the severity of the topic of his or her choice. For example, my paper is titled “Last Breath: An In-depth Analysis of the Anti-vaccination Epidemic in Pertussis, ” my paper is presented to express the risks of not vaccinating children. My leadership is displayed in arguing the importance of health and artificial immunity in order to prevent the death of children.

 

Provide an example of a project in which you set a goal and achieved it in collaboration with others. Reflect on how you developed a plan, worked with others, resolved issues, and used responsible and ethical decision-making in order to pursue this goal. What might you do differently when faced with a similar situation in the future? Include a PDF of this project.

The project that I developed is my research paper. My research paper was written over 13 weeks. I collaborated with my peers in order to receive direction on different stages of my paper such as my draft and outline. Additionally, my sponsor and classmates provided feedback on the references that I chose. My sponsor also checked my facts behind my assertions to ensure that they were ethical. These efforts were beneficial. However, in the future I would like the opportunity to choose group members who are more invested in the class.

Reflect on an assignment or activity you participated in during this leadership class/co-curricular experience that helped you learn more about yourself as a leader/team member. What did you learn about your strengths and areas for improvement? How have you been able to apply what you have learned in other settings? How might you apply these concepts to future settings?

As a leader, my greatest battle is listening to the others around me. I have the ability to take guidance from others, but I still have to manage to suppress my arrogance. I learned that I need to improve on my listening skills. I also feel that I need to improve on my timeliness. I caught myself completing things at the last minute and needing help. However, I chose not to help. This created an issue in the class that made me more open to others’ opinions. I have been able to apply this to my other interactions in organizations. As the Speaker of the Senate, I have learned to rely on others when I need to. I have also been able to communicate with other members in a more positive manner. I will apply the concepts from this class by being more organized and open to communicating with my peers and counterparts.
