For my leadership course option, I took contemporary organizations and management. The course explored the different ways in which organizations are managed and how they are both controlled/affected by internal and external factors.
The class environment was very different from the other classes I had to take. The professor used a relaxed atmosphere to make us learn more effectively. He did this by making us play games that will relate to the chapter we were to cover that week. For example, the day we covered the topic “the different types of leaders” we had to play a game in a pair of two. One person had a paper and the other had nothing. One person had to tell the person with the paper instructions on how to build a paper plane from scratch without ever helping him physically just verbally. In the course of this game, we learned how difficult it was to give instructions without being able to help. Different “leadership techniques” were used in the process. That is; strategic, laissez-faire, coaching, and autocratic leadership styles.
I developed relationship skills such as collaboration and interpersonal communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and change management.
