Academic Internship

In the Summer of 2019, I was fortunate enough to complete an Internship through the Henrico Police Department in their Police Public Information Office. I worked directly under Captain Lauren Hummel, the Public Information Officer. My responsibilities included working on their social media pages- Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram- drafting and editing news releases, editing FOIA documents, as well as photographing and videographing events across the county.

I also completed social media work throughout the summer. While a lot of social media is designed around keeping the public informed about safety concerns, another important matter is community involvement and boosting the image of the Police department. Below are some of my social media posts, a news release example, and a copy of one of my translation works.

I also wrote the script and assisted in producing the following public service announcements about reckless celebratory gunfire and temperatures of cars in the summertime.

Do not leave kids or pets in your car unattended. It only takes minutes for temperatures to rise to dangerous levels.

In a lot of ways, this experience pushed me out of my comfort zone. I was the only intern in the Public Information Office but was one of 13 interns in the whole PD. A lot of activities built into the program for us were designed to enhance the experience of students who had the desire to work in Public Safety in the future in the Officer capacity. Due to the program being designed for these students and not for an office intern life myself, I had experiences like these:

A ride-along with an Officer that led to a tractor trailer accident on I-64
Spending a day on the HPD police boat monitoring the waters of the James River
Flying on the Police Plane over Richmond, VA

Through my photo and video experience, I got to capture some of the Police Department’s most exciting moments over the summer.

Instead of summarizing the internship verbally, I am attaching a video of a speech I gave at the Henrico Board of Supervisors meeting on behalf of the Henrico County Internship. I was 1 of 2 interns from the entire county program chosen to speak about my experience.
