
In the Summer of 2019, I was fortunate enough to complete an Internship through the Henrico Police Department in their Police Public Information Office. I worked directly under Captain Lauren Hummel, the Public Information Officer. My responsibilities included working on their social media pages- Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram- drafting and editing news releases, editing FOIA documents, as well as photographing and videographing events across the county.

While a lot of social media is designed around keeping the public informed about safety concerns, another important matter is community involvement and boosting the image of the Police department. I also wrote the script and assisted in producing the following public service announcements about reckless celebratory gunfire and temperatures of cars in the summertime.
In a lot of ways, this experience pushed me out of my comfort zone. I was the only intern in the Public Information Office but was one of 13 interns in the whole PD. A lot of activities built into the program for us were designed to enhance the experience of students who had the desire to work in Public Safety in the future in the Officer capacity. Due to the program being designed for these students and not for an office intern life myself, I had experiences like these:

Instead of summarizing the internship verbally, I am attaching a video of a speech I gave at the Henrico Board of Supervisors meeting on behalf of the Henrico County Internship. I was 1 of 2 interns from the entire county program chosen to speak about my experience.
