Research

The class I took for my research experience is NURS 363: Research as Foundation for Practice.  In my research class we were walked through a step by step process of how research is initiated and how to find the tools necessary to do our own research in the future. We were broken up into groups of 7- 10 individuals and were assigned to a specific topic. The topic that my group had was food insecurity.

Skills used in this experience:

  • work in a team structure
  • communicate verbally
  • decision making and problem solving

Above is an image of a poster completed in my research class. As a group we made a poster and research paper that proposed the implementation of donor nutrition education to promote healthier options in the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Initially, this project seemed hard because it was something none of us had ever done, however we all were able to successfully complete our proposal. This experience provided me with knowledge I will need for my future career. In this class we discussed evidenced based practice and how to look for evidence-based practice articles. Nurses perform interventions everyday that have been based on research. While performing these interventions it is important to understand the why rather than just performing the tasks. This is where my research class comes into play. With the knowledge on how to find peer reviewed articles from my class, I will be able to understand what I need to do as a nurse and why I must do tasks a certain way. A big skill used in this class was working in a team structure to analyze data and information. As a group we looked up research articles to support our proposal. Before using these articles, we had to analyze the information to make sure that it related to our topic.
