Academic Internship

The purpose of NURS 481: Role Transition was to assist me with beginning to assimilate the role of a professional nurse as outlined by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Practice.  I was assigned to a preceptor on an intermediate care unit to examine and practice applying change and leadership principles as well as observe the role of a nurse as a leader in the delivery of patient care. I gained direct patient care experience,  a lot of nursing skills, and knowledge from this experience. While completing this experience, I gained a total of 200 hours of direct patient care on the intermediate care unit. I was exposed to different medical conditions and procedures. I felt this experience helped me assimilate to the role of a nurse very well and I feel confident that I will do well as a nurse.

Skills used in this experience:

  • Work in a team structure
  • Make decisions and solve problems
  • Communicate verbally
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge
  • Plan, organize and prioritize work

Above is a link of an electronic portfolio that was created to highlight achievements gained through this course as well as the nursing program. There were a total of 40 bullet points that had to be discussed in this portfolio. This portfolio showcases numerous assignments completed during my nursing program that shows how I accomplished the core competencies required for nursing. For each assignment, I had to include an introduction page that described the purpose of the assignment, my approach to the assignment, reason for inclusion of assignment, and core competencies that I felt I achieved with this assignment. One skill used for this experience was making decisions and solving problems. For example, I assessed a patient and discovered wheezes present in the lung fields as well as an oxygen saturation level of 89 percent. I used decision making and problem solving by attaching oxygen to my patient and alerting my preceptor about my findings. From there we mutually agreed that respiratory therapy needed to come visit our patient. My goal is to become an intensive care nurse. As an intensive care nurse you must have great critical thinking and decision making skills. This experience provided me with different situations where I could improve my critical thinking and decision making.

Above is an example of a philosophy paper created in this course. This paper gave me the opportunity to describe what nursing means to me, the purpose of nursing, moral principles that guide my practice, theories that guide my practice, etc. I felt this paper made me have a better understanding of why I like nursing and why I chose this as my career choice. It was an eye-opening assignment and was very helpful. I effortlessly wrote this assignment it was easy and gave me the opportunity to write my opinions. I did have to provide evidence to back up my opinions.
