English 110C: English Composition

Out of all of the classes I have taken this semester, General Biology 1 included, I believe that English Composition has helped me the most. Although it does not directly pertain to my major (Biology), it has helped me grow as a student as a whole. Most importantly, it was helped me become more of a critical thinker. I have put more time and effort into the papers I have written in college, and because of that, I have had to think more critically about what I am writing and whether I deem it sufficient enough. The ability to think critically is very important in Biology. While Biology is a lot of memorization, you can not just memorize the information to be able to understand it, as many people soon forget what they learned because they were just studying for a single test. You must also be able to actually understand what everything means and how things happen, and thus must think critically for the biological processes to make sense. English Composition has also helped me in becoming a more advanced writer. Many biologists do research and thus will eventually have to present that research, which requires them to have advanced writing skills. Most of the time, their research can span over numerous pages, but they still are able to have a formal tone in their writing while effectively using skills such as being comprehensive, transitioning, etc. While I am not the perfect writer, I can tell I have grown in my skills and hopefully can continue this as I go further into my major.
