Overview
The CIA triad is a model of three important responsibilities in cybersecurity; Confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This model is loosely based and should be adapted differently in every situation it is used. In different situations, one core principle could be more important than another. Budgetary restrictions and workload caps can also be factored in.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality pertaining to the CIA triad is making sure that only the people you want can view your secure documents or files. This could require anything from encryptions to an account of everybody who has viewed and sent the document. One example that I have seen in the workplace is having to use identification cards to access computers and that identification card would also have your clearance level and operating power programmed into it.
Integrity
Integrity is needed to make sure that data is not changed or deleted without approval. This maintaining of exactness is needed in the data so that things are not lost in translation but the original can always be brought back and shown for validation.
Availability
The main goal of availability in the CIA triad is the continued performance of all systems. The objective is for the system to be continuous without interruptions from ill-working hardware to a malfunctioning operating system. A recovery system for any mishaps must be included and that can range from a backup hard drive to firewalls etc
Authentication and Authorization
Authentication is when your identity is confirmed in the system. An example would be a user using a username and password to get into a system. While authorization is what you can do once in the system after being authenticated. For example, after a user confirms their identity they can not access all of the benefits of the system in their clearance.
