1 Re-read
My initial course expectations were numerous. I’ll list a few below:
To study of the human mind.
Understanding research and testing methods within the field of psychology and social psychology.
Learn the basic building blocks to further understanding of the human psyche and research methods surrounding them.
Learn the weight of data, accuracy, and above all transparency in research.
Understand the “processes through which people perceive and attempt to understand others…”[ii] and have the ability to “Explain how attitudes are formed and changed, and how they are related to behavior”[iii].
Add to my understanding of colleagues, patients, and forging future relationships.
Ability to understand everyday interactions and the process in which a hypothesis and research study is carried out.
Gather information that will serve as a foundation in both my future career and personal life.
Gain the capacity to openly and eloquently “Discuss the origins and effects of prejudice and discrimination”[iv].
Discuss topics with background information and statistics to back up one’s opinion, regarding discussing race, prejudice and discrimination.
Learn more about “…the factors that influence our liking for other individuals and that lead to the formation of close relationships”[v].
Learn what exactly bonds us to certain people, why we stay close to some, yet drift from others.
Learn about why some people are able to emotionally open up quickly, and others stay closed off.
Build an understanding of human nature and the mind to support both personal and work-related relationships in my future.
Sharpen my ability “…to make connections, or integrate learning, between courses and to outside experiences”[vi].
Expand my ability to connect ideas posed in a classroom setting with real world solutions will prove instrumental to my career and personal relationships in the future.
Learn a lot.
Professor there for me if I need to talk to them or discuss the material.
Learn about other student’s perspectives and be challenged with both my homework and way of thinking.
Gain a few professional friends, more knowledge than I even knew I could gain from this course, and a better understanding of social psychology as a whole.
Implement extreme agenda planning to ensure my success in this and other courses during the Fall 2019 semester.
Focus solely on schoolwork during my designated study hours.
Write down all due dates and up the due date by a couple of days in order to lower the chances of missing deadlines.
The actual outcomes of these expectations were almost all met. One that wasn’t met would be to gain professional friends. This semester has been so arduous that I had nearly no time at all for anything that wasn’t sleep, eating, or studying.
My attitude about Social Psychology has changed in that I realize there is a depth to social psychology that I was not yet aware of. Before taking this course I would have grouped social psychology together with general psychology, not truly knowing the stand out points and ideas presented within the specialty of study.
If I had the ability to go back in time and take this class again, I would take a lighter load of classes so that I would have more time for each class for pondering, for reading, for soaking up all of the information.
One way I’ve grown academically over the last few months is that I now know my limit. I know how many units is too many. I respectfully will not be taking that many ever again. I realize that I do not always have the ability to get all A’s in all of my classes. Some semesters I just need to make sure I pass all of my classes. Balancing life relationships and scholarly pursuits is an extreme challenge. I am still learning more everyday how to do it successfully and with grace.
One skill that I gained from this course that I can utilize in my professional life is balance. Making sure to write down every assignment, every due date, every tid-bit of information you can. You can never have too much information. You don’t want to look back at your work, looking for a diamond in the rough of your notes, and be lacking the information needed. It’s better to have a surplus of information and notes rather than a deficit.

The visual image I chose is a woman balancing it
all. She is balancing a child, a husband, a career, school, personal projects.
She is doing it all under pressure and with grace.

I thought it was interesting, a bit spooky, yet right on point that men fib in order to gain higher chances of engaging in sex just as more women put on a front of sexual intentions in order to improve the chances of retaining whatever non-sexual thing it is they desire.
Men upset women in various ways. The ways that pop up in my mind the quickest would be cat calling and objectifying. These would be almost universally annoying/degrading to most women.
Women upset men in various ways as well, but I think the most common way would be to not communicate clearly or say what they want, then get upset for not receiving what they want. Some women want a man to just “know” what they want. This is ridiculous and only leads to heartache.
The image I chose is that of a construction worker cat-calling a woman walking in the city. It is a meme that jokes about catcalling by giving the construction worker some feminist things to call out to the woman walking by. It is so emblematic of the thing that men do that upsets women, but with a feminist twist.

“Review the items that you answered incorrectly.”
Wow. I missed more than I wanted to. Of course, no one “wants” to miss questions, but I think I need to give myself more review time to prep for exams.
After following the tip from the Study Guide to “look up the correct answers to the ones you missed”, I realized that I made silly mistakes and may have been thrown off by the wordier questions. I will combat this confusion by studying for a longer period of time in shorter bursts, with long enough breaks. I know that I crammed too much and should have given my mind a chance to really have retention and understanding of the material, not just simply memorization.
As I mentioned above, my test taking strategy on the remaining tests will involve starting to study sooner, ex: right now I am reviewing past material and studying current material as it comes up, not waiting for a big moment to cram everything in at once.
What I learned from reviewing my grade and the questions I did not get correct on the exam is that there were many questions I tripped up on simply because of wording. I also noticed that near the end of the exam I may have started to wane as far as energy is concerned. Next time I will ensure I’m taking an exam in the morning hours and have had coffee. Making sure I’m taking the exam at an opportune time when properly fueled after extensive studying over a longer period of time will greatly help both my study habits and end results.
“Did you augment your notes as you read though the chapters?”
I did augment my notes as I read the chapters. This time around I will review the notes more throughout the weeks rather than reviewing the all right before the exam.
“Did you space the review sheet over the week prior to the test?”
This is something I did not do correctly. The review for me was too crammed and I needed to space it out more.

For this blog I’ve chosen a sort of poster that states that tomorrow is where everything gets done. This poster basically is my life. As a former hard-core procrastinator turned planner turned “swallow the frog” believer, I can attest that “tomorrow” that magical place, always seems like a better time to study, clean, or anything you may be tempted to push off. However, I have learned over the years, through many trials and tribulations, that getting it, whatever it is, done today, not tomorrow, will not only benefit you now, but it will benefit you later. The more you push for productive habits, the more easily they will come with time, eventually coming naturally.

I guess I am not surprised that there is a strong connection between music and relationships. I have always thought there was some sort of connection between people who gravitated to certain music styles, but didn’t quite know how to explain it, or imagine that it would be a scientifically backed idea.
I have noticed a similarity in music preference between myself and my husband. I have noticed before that sometimes a difference in values has also presented a difference in musical tastes. It was almost like nails on a chalkboard when someone with whom I did not share a lot of common values shared their music with me during a long car ride.
Now of course, or maybe not so obviously, I share the same ideals as my husband. We value the same things and place our priorities in the same order regarding family, work, leisure time, etc. This s even more apparent now that I am pondering our musical tastes. We aren’t super similar in personality or hobbies, but we do share a love of certain music genres and definitely have shared values.
Ellie Goulding – How Long Will I Love You – My husband – I walked down the aisle to this song being played acoustically on guitar and being sung by the guitar player. It was a breezy May day in San Diego near the beach in my parent’s backyard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=an4ySOlsUMY
Hanson – MMMBop – Winning a billion radio contests as a kid. Asking for CDs as prizes.
*NSYNC – I Want you Back – Working late nights as a server in a nursing home.
Blink 182 – All The Small Things – Associate this with Middle School. Driving to the beach with friends’ older brothers. Breaking rules. Not caring about anything but my friends and “hanging out”
The House That Built Me – Miranda Lambert – Pain from Growing up with a narcissistic mother.

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Born On The Bayou – My dad, Growing up helping him work on a rental house that had a certain mulch like garden smell and dusty all of the time. Dry. Very dry weather in San Diego, California.
Imagine Dragons – Thunder – They played this song at the start of the “Joshua Tree Half Marathon”. The Half Marathon was at night, under a full moon, in the middle of the desert, in deep sinking sand. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my entire life. I will never forget it.

“What kind of student am I?” Well, I am self-aware. I know my quirks. I know what I’m very skilled at and what I lack. I attribute this both to my upbringing and my spouse’s career. I have to take care of things on my own currently and have been doing that since a very young age. Of course everyone reacts differently to hardships. In my case it was a nose-to-the-ground, “set goals and achieve them” mentality that allowed me to thrive in situations where many have faltered.
I took the “attached General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE)” quiz and my total score was 38, or a mean of 3.8. According to the score sheet, the more points you add up, the more, self-efficacy you have. According to our text, when one has self-efficacy, it can affect many areas of their life in a positive way.[i] Their self-esteem may be higher,[ii] they may set and conquer bigger more lofty goals,[iii] and they may not back down at the sign of confrontation, trouble, or any difficult situation.[iv]

This image for me would be titled “strong”. However, this image has a title already and it is “Steadfast businesswoman gets hit by a wrecking ball”.[v] How very exact and descriptive. I chose to include this image with my blog post because this is a representation of me. Of course, the giant wrecking ball my strong shoulder is breaking to bits is a metaphor for life’s challenges. When I was a bit younger, maybe 10 and under, I hadn’t learned how to thrive, to cope. Pretty quickly, after leaving elementary school and entering middle school, I had figured it out. The rest is history. Literally. From then on, I know that anything that came my way I could handle. Anything I Was going through at home, any school difficulty, social conflict, I could overcome and thrive.

There are many objectives laid out in the syllabus for PSYC 304 that will be valuable for me to learn and will add to my understanding of different psychological ideas and research methods. Any endeavors for my future, whether directly related to the field of psychology or in a parallel industry, will surely benefit from any and all study of the human mind.
The top item on the objectives list states that as a class we will seek to have an understanding of social psychologist’s procedures “to test hypotheses about the behavior of individuals and groups.”[i] Of course, the idea of understanding research and testing methods within the field of psychology and social psychology specifically important to me now, as an undergraduate studying psychology. However, this knowledge of the procedural steps taken by social scientists is valuable to me in the role of ‘future social researcher’. Inevitably, my path will lead me to a career where knowledge of psychology through the social psychology lens will prove invaluable for on the job projects. The basic building blocks to further understanding of the human psyche and research methods surrounding it, start here, in Social Psychology. Learning the weight of data, accuracy, and above all transparency in research during my undergraduate education will help me during any career path I choose in the future weather research focused or patient centered.
The “processes through which people perceive and attempt to understand others…”[ii] and being able to “Explain how attitudes are formed and changed, and how they are related to behavior”[iii] are both important topics within social psychology that will add to my understanding of colleagues, patients, and forging future relationships. The ability to understand everyday interactions and the process in which a hypothesis and research study is carried out are important concepts where a strong grasp is desirable before leaving college in pursuit of a professional career. I will gather information in this class that will serve as a foundation in both my future career and personal life.
The capacity to openly and eloquently “Discuss the origins and effects of prejudice and discrimination”[iv] is an ability that needs perfecting during my time at Old Dominion. With background information and statistics to back up one’s opinion, discussing race, prejudice and discrimination proves to be a conversation worth having in both the social and scholarly setting.
I am excited to learn more about “…the factors that influence our liking for other individuals and that lead to the formation of close relationships”[v] because I have wondered throughout the years what exactly bonds us to certain people, why we stay close to some, yet drift from others. I wonder why some are able to emotionally open up quickly, and others stay closed off. An understanding of human nature and the mind will support both personal and work-related relationships in my future.
The ability “…to make connections, or integrate learning, between courses and to outside experiences”[vi] is invaluable to me and my cohort. The more time spent in a scholarly environment, surrounded by a community of like-minded, knowledge hungry scholars, the more open my mind stays to new knowledge, new skills, and gaining a broader understanding of the world around me. The power to connect ideas posed in a classroom setting with real world solutions will prove instrumental to my career and personal relationships in the future.
I expect to learn a lot in this course. I expect the professor to be there for me if I need to talk to them or discuss the material. I expect to learn about other student’s perspectives and be challenged with both my homework and way of thinking.
I am hoping to gain a few professional friends, more knowledge than I even knew I could gain from this course, and a better understanding of social psychology as a whole.
I plan to implement extreme agenda planning to ensure my success in this and other courses during the Fall 2019 semester. A giant agenda helps me plan out my day to day appointments and study hours. I focus solely on schoolwork during my designated study hours. I write down all due dates and up the due date by a couple of days in order to lower the chances of missing deadlines.
The
image I chose for Blog 1 is a meme of ‘Research (Mark) Wahlberg’. ‘Research
Wahlberg’ as ‘their’ username states on twitter,’ is chatting to someone about
the idea of talking about research, an idea or test in a casual, colloquial
manner.[vii] This casual conversation
is filled with subjective, opinion-based facts. No scientific backing or data. Research
Wahlberg wants solid longitudinal data and scientific reasoning to back up the
claims. I chose this meme because I love Mark Wahlberg, and I detest when the ‘average
everyday Joe’ supports claims with colloquial, everyday reasoning with no scientific
basis for proof.
