College is where you learn more about what works for you in terms of grasping
and applying knowledge, whereas, in high school, everything was essentially
given to you. To me, studying is where you do most of your learning, especially in
college. That’s the time when you review everything you’ve learned for that unit,
section, etc., and summarize it in a way that makes sense to you. Homework is
only a small part of studying. Yes, you do review learned material and apply it to
the work, but homework usually covers a small portion of what is currently being
taught. Only recently did I discover my preferred study method: flashcards. I used
to think they were a waste of time but I had no idea how helpful they were. I still
struggle with studying, however. I’ve been trying to rewrite my notes since I
heard handwriting them helps with memorization, but I’m still looking for a
method that isn’t so time-consuming. I think I’m doing okay in my dance,
chemistry, and sociology classes. History is where I’m struggling because the
entire class is reading long chapters and taking notes, which doesn’t engage my
brain. Besides, I’ve read this information before. I enjoy my sociology class
because even though there’s a lot of reading, it’s new information. As I said, I’m
still figuring out study methods that will help me enjoy my history class.
