Four issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals are security breaches, privacy concerns, data inaccuracies, and system implementation.

A security breach is defined as an act that leads to damage of a system or unauthorized access to the system. An example of a security breach was in 2018 when Facebook was attacked. The perpetrators were able to exploit Facebook and gain access to over 50 million of their users’ personal data. This is a significant concern because unauthorized criminals could gain information that could potentially be used to intimidate, threaten, or blackmail users. Facebook was inevitably fined and left with the bill.

Privacy concern is ordinarily how brands and advertisers control collecting and exploiting individual data relating to their clients and future clients. With the dematerializing of objects, we have essentially dematerialized people as well; this has become known as PII (personally identifiable information). While everyone does not have a concern with data privacy, it can be the same as having someone stalk you.

Data inaccuracies, while the definition may be self-explanatory, the importance and underlying problems that can exist may not be as apparent. Living in the age of technology and information, we rely heavily on data accuracy. Inaccurate data can potentially cost someone money, their freedom, or even their lives.  some of the ways inaccurate data can become a financial burden is with your debt. Inaccurate data can tell your biller than you never made your payment, that you made your payment late, or that you made a smaller payment than required. In a society as large as the United States, we constantly see individuals arrested for mistaken identities due to inaccurate data. In the past, the police issued a high-risk search warrant, with the wrong address. This has caused wrongful arrests and deaths in many cases.

System implementation is when you are training persons who are going to operate the system. Whenever there are humans involved, there will be errors. The reason system implementation is an issue when storing electronic information about individuals is because someone may not be properly trained to handle the sensitive data, which can cause mishaps.
