Criminal Justice and Cybercrime Overlap

While the ‘Tortoise and the Hare’ makes a great children’s story to inspire children to do their best, this is a real race with cybercrime and criminal justice; spoiler alert, criminal justice is not the winner. Even in the “real world,” the police do not prevent crimes; they respond to them. The overlap between cybercrimes and criminal justice is widening. While our justice system is trying to catch up, cybercrimes are evolving to the next level. What is defined as a cybercrime can be controversial because I goes it can conflict with a “Free Nation” rights. Cyberbullying may be morally wrong but it can be apart of freedom of speech. Prior to the creation of the first cyberlaw, criminal justice was dealing with physical crimes, that often required very little debate. Cybersecurity has been labeled as the most significant threat facing financial institutions, the federal government, corporations, and investors, but this also includes gamers, students, really anyone involved with any sort of tech. In 2021, children are exposed to technology before they can distinguish shapes, and some learn to code and hack before they can drive. Cybercrimes can occur from another city, state, country, and even continent, from the comfort of their bedrooms. Experienced hackers rarely leave any evidence behind, and more people are doing it. Criminal justice has been able to make a number of advancements with cyber with the help of cyber forensics. Cyber forensics is used to determine who is responsible for what exactly happened on the computer while documenting the evidence and performing a proper investigation. This overlap relates to the curriculum because it tells students the importance of protection and it goes into detail about how businesses should protect themselves with the framework. The coursework also dives into detail of the risk associated with cyber threats. While knowing the risk we can avoid the bullet of cybercrimes instead of hoping the criminal justice system will prevent it.
