ASSIGNMENT 1 TAKEAWAY

Assignment one discussed intercultural sensitivity. Intercultural sensitivity is more important now than ever. With the United States being so diverse it is important that more people are sensitive and aware of other peoples cultures. This assignment required me to evaluate myself and see where I felt that I aligned. I felt as if I aligned with the “accepting of difference” stage because I can very easily respect cultural differences with people that I am around.

This Assignment also made me realize that not everyone is as sensitive to other cultures as there are many different stages of intercultural sensitivity. People who fall in different stages may not be as accepting or fully understand other cultures. This made me realize the importance of educating peers and family members on the importance of being culturally sensitive. While I think that I am very aware of cultural differences I think that it is important to ensure that society as a whole can become more aware of this. I chose the above picture as my representative image because it is a very diverse group and it symbolizes unity of people of different cultures.

ASSIGNMENT 2

Assignment 2 discussed values and what values specifically were important to me individually. This assignment caused me to do a lot of self reflection and really try and see what I value the most and what is important to me. I chose competition as my value because I believe that is what drives me to be productive everyday athletically and academically. I chose this picture above because it illustrates competition well and the satisfaction of outperforming others.

ASSIGNMENT 4 TAKEAWAY

Assignment 4 was very interesting and gave me a different perspective on advertisement. In this assignment I compared gender in American advertisement in comparison to Asian advertisement. In doing this it was evident that the two cultures had somewhat different views on gender and gender roles. The American advertising had a less individualized depiction of females while Asian advertising did this very well. This project related well to super bowl commercials in the sense that it can show you how society views things. Every year super bowl ads are changed to reflect the current state of the country and its needs or interests and this remains true to an extent in advertising everywhere. I chose a picture of a superbowl commercial as a representative image.

ASSIGNMENT 5

In assignment 5 I discussed the differences between emotion in Chinese and American cultures, specifically emotional recognition. This article was very interesting and eye opening and showed great examples of cultural differences you may not even notice when interacting with a person of a different culture. The article discussed the differences in emotional recognition based off of facial cues and showed that there were many differences in how people perceived emotion in the two cultures. This assignment was very related to cultural sensitivity and was another example of how there are so many things that differ in cultures around the world. I chose this picture of cultural sensitivity as my representative image.
