Overview of SCADA Systems
SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems manage systems such as power,
water, and gas facilities. These systems use parts like Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to monitor and control processes, often in real time.
Components
SCADA systems include Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), which collect data, and HMIs, which
display data to operators for decision making. Communication networks connect these parts to
the main system, allowing operators to adjust processes when needed.
Security Vulnerabilities
SCADA systems are often vulnerable to cyberattacks due to outdated security practices. Hackers
can gain control of critical infrastructure, causing major disruptions and issues. To reduce risks,
stronger security tools like firewalls and VPNs are necessary (Macaulay, 2016).
