How do the principles of science relate to cybersecurity?
The principles of science relate to cybersecurity for me in that a scientist if often trying to solve a problem and the principles of science allow for solving that problem or at least testing a hypothesis of a potential solution. The scientific method structure is as follows: Ask a question, research, propose a hypothesis and then test the hypothesis. This directly correlates to a solid cybersecurity plan where the best practice is to test for weaknesses in a system and then working backwards to guard against those weaknesses and defend against potential attacks. This is an ongoing process as cyber criminals are always adapting methods of attack whether it be phishing or password hacking, etc.
According to the National Institute of Health the basic principles of science are “respect for integrity of knowledge, collegiality, honesty, objectivity and openness. These relate to cybersecurity because the entire community can benefit from those principles and working together against cyber criminals so sharing information in the spirit of collegiality, honesty and openness makes the entire system safer and more resilient. The principles of science are fundamental to any sound cybersecurity system and plan of action.
