Entry #2

Old Dominion University (ODU) offers many different majors that correlate with cyber security that you are able to study. I was originally a Computer Science Engineer major when I was a freshmen in college. I already had some background knowledge about coding and how its used. So switching to cybersecurity only benefitted me in switching majors. Cybersecurity has just begin to flourish at ODU, now creating its own program just for cybersecurity majors. Also what helps me personally is having roommates that are doing somewhat of the same major as me. One of my friends is a modeling and simulation department which can help me with my work as well. Another my friends is taking Electronics and Communications Engineering courses that tie into cyber security. In the past, I had taken a couple of courses for ECE to help me with cybersecurity for the future. Its very beneficially to have people around me who can do what I can do but are also experts in their own fields. It allows teamwork to work better and we are able to collaborate with each-other as well. When you mix related majors together, students are able to see how information flows between each of the classes and get a wider understanding of how cybersecurity and other majors work. This will help if you decide to switch majors or find a new pathway you’d like to take. Eventually making it easier to find something that truly is for you. You will be doing more of a wide range of learning and putting IT and ECE courses together for better understanding of how these majors really work together and separately as well. Its very interesting to see how a simple path can lead to many other pathways that you can explore and that you didn’t know much about.
