Writing assignment #5
“We do not choose our destinies, but we must do our duties” is my favorite quote so far. I believe it is so true because we could not predict our life in the future, but we must put ourselves to work to get a better future. When I was young, I used to think that I must be a teacher or a police officer. But, when I get older, I think back to my dreams, and ask myself: “Is it possible for me?” My parents used to force me to be a doctor, or an engineer when I was young, but I did not see it as my passion. It is because I believe only I can determine what I want to be, and what helps me to have a “better future.” A “better future” for me is making enough money to live, to pay for houses, food, and other things needed to live, not what I wanted to get. I think it is important to love my job and go to work with a smile on my face.
I love to look at nature in every detail. I love to hear the birds singing, the shape of the clouds, or just the stream nearby my house. I love nature, and what nature brings us. I started to think about biology more when I was in high school. I was curious to know everything that I see every day is made of, and how it works together to create an ecosystem. When I first take general biology 1, I was falling in love with biology. I want to see myself as a biologist. At this time, I must choose a major for college because I started with community college first. I did some research and get lost on the Internet. I realize there are a ton of branches of Biology majors. I could work in a laboratory, marine, wetlands, genetics, zoo, etc. Many thoughts are going on in my mind. I could not decide right away. However, my friend’s aunt is a laboratory technician. She shares with me how she does every day at her workplace. She works at LabCorp. It is a big company, and it is everywhere in the United States. Laboratory? That sounds interesting to me. I researched some topics on laboratory technicians. I decided to give myself a chance to be a laboratory technician specifically in blood, and cells. I hope I could help people to discover diseases and what makes them sick. Like, if a person gets into an emergency room, they need me to test their blood and check the blood bank to see if the blood in the blood banks could be transferred to that patient. In this way, they might have to test their blood first and figure out their blood conditions. That patient could have blood disorders such as blood cancer, blood clots, or anemia. The patient could not see or talk to laboratory technicians, but they are so important. I am a little sad when I see a person who is addicted to drugs and alcohol while their cells are still fighting inside the body to keep them alive.
Then, I talked to my academic advisor. He put me in General Biology. I am doing good in my major, and I find interest in biology classes. I never think that I would choose this major, but it comes to me as a hint for my future. I love to share what I learn with my friends and my family. I want them to know better about their body and how to live healthy life. Personally, I learn a lot from the lectures in every class. I just started my major in biology this year because I am a transfer student. I only took general biology 1 and 2 when I was in community college but when I transfer to Old Dominion University, I have more chances to explore biology courses. I took Genetic, and Cell Biology this semester. These two classes are very similar. I feel like I have learned a material two times. It gives me chance to dive into the concept deeper and understand the materials better. There are many Biology electives that I can choose to take, but I must select ones that fit my career. I talk with my academic advisor at Old Dominion University a few times, and I have a better understanding of these courses. I understand what courses are good for my career.
I do not know what the future would bring me tomorrow, I only know to work hard forward to the future. I try my best in every class while I am still in college. I feel like it could be my luggage for my career. I am still pursuing it until I make it works. Some classes are required lots of work, but I will not look at it as a barrier that prevents me from my goals. I wish I can share my little knowledge of Biology with people I know, to help them know what is good for their health, and how their body is working hard every day to keep them healthy.
