Course Reflection

I learned a lot in ENGL 390: TESL Methods, Materials, and Assessment. We covered theories of teaching ESL and language learning, such as the Audio-lingual method (AL) and the 5Cs. We critiqued lesson plans and case studies. Lastly, we put what we learned into practice by making our activities and lessons. My favorite part of the class was designing task-based activities. Now, I find myself coming up with new ideas for lessons all the time. For example, I watched several youtube videos where people try to follow recipes in a foreign language. I think that could be a fun activity for level 1 or 2 students.

Coming into this class, my goals were to increase my understanding of the English language, learn more about TESL, and see my conversation partner, Partner 1, pass his English proficiency test. I am happy that I was able to complete all three of my goals. I found out in the beginning of the semester that Parter 1 passed his exam and is now able to be a TA! I am so happy for him, and the experience has made me realize how rewarding being an ELS teacher can be.
