Introduction

Step Forward Level 5 Student eBook (Second Edition) is written by Jayme Adelson-Goldstein, Jennie Currie Santamaria, and Therese Naber, and it is geared toward adult ESL students. According to the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA), young adults at Level 5 proficiency can “understand and communicate in English and participate in all academic classes” (WIDA 16).

The textbook is divided into 10 Units:

My Classroom Context

I intend to teach Level 5 English to adults in an American college classroom setting. For example, I might use this textbook for international students taking an intensive summer English language class before they start their regular fall semester. After the course completion, students should be ready to study or work in an English-speaking country.

About the Step Forward Series Director

Jayme Adelson-Goldstein is an ESL teacher-trainer, consultant, and author living in Northridge, California. She began her ESL career working with helicopter pilots from the UAEi in 1981 and from there went on to work with the adult division of LAUSD as a classroom teacher, program coordinator, and professional development specialist. She taught the adult ESL methods courses at UCLA Extension for many years and was a part of the ESL Teacher Institute as well. She has been involved in curriculum development for Distance Learning programs on a local, state and federal level and has helped develop mentor programs though CAL PRO (the adult education professional development program funded by the California Department of Education). As an ESL consultant, Jayme conducts teacher-training workshops on topics such as vocabulary development, focused listening, cooperative learning, and multi-level instruction across the U.S. and Canada.

Jayme and her husband, Gary Goldstein, (author of the young adult series, The Mythfits) can usually be found writing at their respective computers, walking their rather odd but loveable dog, Baxter, or listening to their daughter’s tales of life in the land of musicians.
