This activity will serve as a <strong><em>summative assessment<\/em><\/strong>. Its effectiveness depends upon students already having a good understanding of the unit\u2019s content. If they do not already have the vocabulary words memorized, they will struggle to participate and not have as much fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Describe vocabulary words<\/li><li>Use vocabulary words in a sentence<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Game Description<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This game is an adaptation of Taboo, a popular word-guessing game. The teacher creates cards based on vocabulary words and concepts from the unit. IAs you can see below, have modified the game to work for a classroom setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preparation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make at least 6 Taboo cards per student or use the traditional taboo game cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are divided into two equal groups<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phase one of a turn<\/strong>: Start 60 second timer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a. One student (<strong><em>Clue Giver<\/em><\/strong>) draws a card<br>b. <em><strong>Clue Giver<\/strong><\/em> describes the vocabulary word without using any of the taboo words<br>c. The rest of his\/her\/their teammates (<em><strong>Guessers<\/strong><\/em>) try to guess the word<br>d. The opposing team (<strong><em>Checkers<\/em><\/strong>) makes sure<strong> <em>Clue Giver<\/em><\/strong> does not say any of the taboo words<br>e. One of four things can happen<br>\u2022 If the vocabulary word is guessed,<em> <strong>Clue Giver\u2019s<\/strong> <\/em>team gets a point<br>\u2022 If <strong><em>Checkers<\/em> <\/strong>catches <em><strong>Clue Giver<\/strong><\/em> saying a taboo word OR using pantomime, <em><strong>Clue Giver<\/strong><\/em> must discard the current card (no points awarded)<br>\u2022 If <em><strong>Clue Giver<\/strong> <\/em>does not know how to describe the word, he\/she\/they can discard the current card (no points awarded)<br>\u2022 If the timer goes off, phase one of the turn is complete. Proceed to step 3<br>f. Repeat steps 2a-2e<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phase two of a turn<\/strong>: Start a 30 second timer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a. <em><strong>Clue Giver <\/strong><\/em>tries to use the vocabulary word (on the most recently drawn card) in a sentence<br>b. Teacher evaluates the sentence on the suggested scale<br>\u2022 No attempt \/ not understandable \/ 4 or more errors = 0 points<br>\u2022 Somewhat correct \/ 2-3 errors = 1 point<br>\u2022 Correct \/ 1 or fewer errors = 2 points<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The teams switch roles. The team with the <strong><em>Clue Giver<\/em><\/strong> last turn are now <em><strong>Checkers<\/strong><\/em>, while the former<strong><em> Checkers<\/em><\/strong> now has an opportunity to earn points<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 5:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within each team, <strong><em>Guessers <\/em><\/strong>take turns being <strong><em>Clue Giver<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 6:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeat steps 2-4 until Teacher chooses to end the game. As long as time allows, have each student be Clue Giver at least once<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 7:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tally up points<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 8:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team with most points wins<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How will the game assess learning?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game will assess learning through the points system. Phase one will evaluate \u201cObjective one: Describe vocabulary words,\u201d and phase two will evaluate \u201cObjective two: Use vocabulary words.\u201d In addition, throughout the game students will need to use reading and verbal communication skills<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specific Example<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example of Taboo cards based on <a
