SPAN 201

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

I was able to gain a better understanding of the Spanish cultural perspectives by completing the investigation assignment in LingroHub cultural exploration. I had to research different topics about the culture and write about my findings.

Doing the investigation assignments in Contraseña LingroHub, I was see the similarities between the Spanish culture and the United States culture. After doing research on a specific location, I learned that the Spanish culture face the same issues that we do. This information helped me realize that we are not the only country searching for alternative ways to be more energy efficient. The cultural investigation assignments challenged my bias way of thinking by gaining knowledge and a better understanding of the Spanish culture.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in communities is very important. It gives you a sense of belonging. I have not had a chance to engage in the global community but I am very active within my community. I am always searching for different opportunities to give back to the community. Most of the time, I do not take pictures or boast about it.

Recently, I have started supporting a local cause, in which donations from a local café’s open mic night are given to women in need of help providing for their child or children. The open mic night also showcase local artists and their talents. I was able to share a few of my poems while doing it for a great cause. Engaging in the community is very rewarding and fulfilling.

Interpersonal Communication

Interpersonal communication gave me the opportunity to talk to someone in a Spanish speaking country. This form of communication is presented by TalkAbroad with the capabilities to video chat with the person which I scheduled prior to the assignment due date.

This assignment was always my greatest challenge. I would like to say that I am getting better at holding conversations in Spanish but I have not. I understood what my partner was saying but I was having difficulty with responding. I believe my difficulty came from not feeling confident. I really appreciated my partner correcting me when I said something incorrectly. She was very helpful by telling me the correct way to say something and allowing me to repeat after her.

I learned that I need to be confident in my speaking and do not hesitate to ask questions.

Presentational Speaking

I was able to do an ecotourism video for a project which required presentational speaking.
This was an opportunity to share pictures and how I spent my vacation in Hawaii.

Speaking Spanish fluently is definitely a challenge for me. To help with my speaking, I wrote down what I wanted to say during my video. I also challenged myself to video myself during the presentation instead of doing a voiceover. This helped me gain confidence in my speaking. Next time, I will practice a little more before I do my presentation.

Presentational Writing

With presentational writing, I was able to complete a project where I had to give the description of the items in a clothing style box. This gave me an opportunity to write descriptive Spanish words in the correct conjugated form.

This was our first project and was more prepared for this project, therefore it was easier for me. The only difficulty I had on this assignment was trying to remember what I wrote from the rough draft I created at home because were unable to use our vocabulary or grammar words during this writing assignment. Overall, I did very well on this project. With all writing assignments, next time, I will study my vocabulary and grammar words more.

Interpretive Listening

Interpretive listening gave me an opportunity to listen to the spoken Spanish language to gain a better comprehension of the language. This assignment was also a way to hear the language spoken correctly. It gave me a chance to practice and repeat the correct form of the word spoken.

I had the opportunity to do several listening assignments in Contraseña LingroHub. Most of the assignments tested my ability to choose the correct pronunciation of Spanish words used in intonation patterns. I did not have any difficulty with this listening assignment as the Spanish language is spoken with a lot of emotions. I will use the listening activity to help me better my speaking ability.

Interpretive Reading

In class, I had the opportunity to read and interpret short stories in Spanish. This gave me the opportunity to gain knowledge of Spanish culture.

Reading the short stories was my favorite part of my Spanish Class. I really enjoy writing and being able to see written work in the Spanish language fascinated me. The stories was written with a twist that held my attention until the end. Some of the words I could not interpret but our professor would interpreted the words we had not learned. Overall, I was able to read the stories with enough comprehension to understand the stories.
