Teaching Advocacy Plan

In efforts to maintain the music program, I think one of the main priorities in keeping music is that it allows students to have a creative outlet to let out their frustrations or just to feel a part of something. Allowing students to have an area of school where there is not as much pressure is essential in kid’s and teen’s mental health. Another priority is making sure to have the right equipment. While it is not essential to have the top-notch instruments and the nicest equipment, having some stuff should be a priority so kids are getting a well-rounded music education. Lastly, having the support of parents is a top priority for me. If I do not have parents that understand how important it is for kids to practice or how taking a music class can help other areas of school, it will be difficult to have students who care. Basically, if a kid sees their parent not care about them practicing or encouraging them to do it, kids just won’t care. I understand that you can’t control parents which is understandable, but I plan on trying my absolute hardest to get their attention.

One of the ways that I plan on making sure that all of this happens is having regular meetings or open communication with the parents to make sure that these are getting done. Another way to help is doing some fundraisers with my students but making it fun and making it things that people will actually enjoy or buy. I know that I am stealing one of the suggestions but inviting my principal and other staff into my classroom so they can see how much it benefits it students and see it firsthand. Another way would possibly be newsletters maybe about our music program or things that my students are working on and have those sent out to people. Lastly, I know having a concert sounds basic, but including like a little discussion about music and the affect it has on students at the beginning could be very beneficial.
