If I am not admitted into my major, I will switch my major into an education major. I would choose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Park, Recreation, and Tourism studies, with a concentration in Recreational Therapy.
A career in Rec Therapy would be extremely interesting, as it is very hands on and interactive. Recreational Therapy is a career in which professionals use recreational activities and games to help individuals return to full participation in life in cognitive, emotional, and physical function. Some of these activities may include arts, crafts, sports, pets, and games. A fun fact about this major is that they participate in the wheelchair Olympics! I would like to pursue this major because it seems like it has all the concepts I like, which are helping people, getting to make connections and interact with patients in a fun and beneficial manner. The Academic Advisor for this major would be Shelly Beaver.
I would need to take Introduction to Park, Recreation, and Tourism studies, and Leisure and Human behavior next semester. While I would need to take STAT, I first need to take college algebra. However, I am on track for English, and I have taken the other courses needed. I would potentially need to take STAT over the summer to make sure I stay on track for sophomore year of this major. Or, in this major PSYC 203S is needed sophomore year, I could replace it with STAT, because I have already taken PSYC203S. At that point, I would be all caught up and ready to pursue this major.
Luckily, the Recreational Therapy Professionals came and gave a presentation for the Health Professions community, and I got a card of information and who to contact for more information. If I wanted to gain experience, I could ask to volunteer in the wheelchair Olympics, or perhaps ask for some other form of volunteer work.
